Alice’s tea party

011

Alice’s Tea Party is an installation by Nendo in Tokyo for an event held at Ozone Living Design Center, celebrating the 100th anniversary of English tea brand LIPTON in Japan.

021

Nendo created Alice’s tea party based on the Mad  Hatter’s Tea Party in the story ALice in the Wonderland.Tables and chairs  have being distorted to create a sense of receding depth in the room.

031

The purposely distorted furnitures bring the visitors into a space which seems to be long and narrow. Visitors might have to squeeze into the chairs or hanging while sitting on their chairs as the designer shrank and enlarged some of the chairs.

Tokyo’s kisala Restaurant is composed of four areas: one counter each for Japanese food and Western food, a cigar bar, and a private dining room. We gave each space a different feel by varying the tone of the floorboards, and gradually increased the brightness of the floorboards to connect the space. Equally subtly, the spaces for the cigar bar and private dining area are defined by lace curtains, and mirrored panels give discrete spaces the feeling of being connected. Textiles with colours chosen to match the tones of the floorboards give a sense of texture

Measure Drawing at Hujia Garden Nanjing (胡家花园)

measure drawing

As a given assignment for a class named Basic Preservation and Management of Architecture Legacy, 8 of us are assigned to measure a few houses (民居)located at Mingyang road (鸣阳街)

Photobucket

The residents who stay here have moved out recently and the condition of the houses are in a mess. We  have to climb into the house through the backyard window.

Photobucket

We were told to assemble at the site  last Saturday and were shortly brief through by a guided teacher.Three people have to work in a group to complete the whole measure drawing in 2 weeks.

Photobucket

The back  of the house is in a mess.

The added concrete structure at the back elevation.

Photobucket

The houses allocated for our group is quite big  ,but there are not much details except the old doorways. The space layout follows Chinese traditional courtyard design where a few collection of blocks are separated by courtyard.

Photobucket

There are visible added concrete structure to the original building.

First floor is brick and timber structure while second floor structure is mainlyconstructed by timber.

The whole house is using the wood ladder rather than a proper staircase to connect first floor and second floor.According to our measure drawing teacher, our drawings will be used for the future conservation of this area after they dismantled the whole site.

The 3 houses have a strong China Republic Era style, with fair-faced grey brickwork, wooden doors and windows, and plain yet simple ornaments. The Chinese Communist Party delegation increased the wall height at the courtyard to prevent the monitoring and destroying of Kuomintang spies.

20+10+X World Architecture Community Awards 4th cycle: Chen House by Marco Casagrande

1

Chen House
Taiwan, 2007-2008,
Residential buildings / Country houses
Marco Casagrande (1971) 71

21

CHEN HOUSE - The house is realized on an old Japanese cherry-farm in the Datun -mountains of North-Taiwan. It is designed as a vessel to react on the demanding wind, flooding and heat conditions on the site. -

31

The house is a stick raised above the ground in order to let the flood waters run under it. The different spaces are connected to a flexible movement within the axis of outdoor and indoor functions.

41

The smaller bathroom and kitchen unit acts as a kicker stabilizing the wooden structure during the frequent typhoons and earthquakes. - The bio-climatic architecture is designed to catch the cool breeze from the Datun -river during the hot days and to let in the small winds circulating on the site between the fresh water reservoir pond and the farmlands.

51

A fire place is used during the winter for heating and for cooking tea. In connection with the bathroom is a small sauna. - The house is not strong or heavy – it is weak and flexible. It is also not closing the environment out, but designed to give the farmers a needed shelter. - Ruin is when man-made has become part of nature. With this house we were looking forward to design a ruin. -
